Eyong Enoh of Cameroon Kicks His Way to Stardom

By: Celina Eno

Eyong Enoh’s ascendency into the den of The Indomitable Lions can be seen as nothing short of triumphant. One of the few post Mila Roger’s generation of players to have grown from the rudiments of armature professional leagues in Africa, Enoh Eyong has made it to Ajax Amsterdam. This fast rising Cameroonian soccer star started his professional career with a humble local club in Tiko, South West region of Cameroon. Still in his region of birth, he was quickly signed by Mount Cameroon FC and he was also part of this team that went on to win the Cup of Cameroon and was voted young player of the year. This set the precedence for international scouts to seek his signature.

Ajax Cape Town (South Africa) caught his delight but he could not sign for the “Urban Warriors” as they are locally termed in South Africa because of lack of international experience. However, because Enoh was part of the Cameroon’s National ‘’under 17’’side that went on to win the CEMAC regional Cup, Enoh was quickly recruited by a team in Cyprus. His one year stint in Cyprus was enough to push Ajax Cape Town to urgently sign him and give him a place in the first team.

Subsequently, Enoh’s humility and work ethics quickly won him favour in his new club. He was then promoted to Captain of Ajax Cape Town and the club made tremendous impact in the South African PSL. This was accompanied by international caps with the Cameroon national Under 20 side. His successful reign in Ajax Cape Town brought one inevitable consequence – his transfer to the mother club Ajax Amsterdam. While his transfer to Ajax Amsterdam was praised by friends and fans as a promotion well deserved, it ironically brought untold hardships to Ajax Cape Town as the club struggles to find a captain as charismatic, courageous and yet honest as Enoh. The club has suddenly failed to make it to the top three places in the PSL table and internal squabbles within the team has caused the axing of the club Manager and suspensions of other players. Sports reporter Robert Marawa of the Super Sports Channel lamented that the constant poaching of talents from Ajax Cape Town by Ajax Amsterdam is impeding the success of Ajax Cape Town in Africa international club competitions.

However, Enoh quickly settled in his new club in Holland where he used less than three months to win a regular starting place for Ajax Amsterdam playing as a holding defender. This young talent has managed a couple of goals for his club, a feat not easily achieved by defenders. His strong work ethics and great sense of professionalism is rapidly winning for him friends in and out of the club. Fans in Amsterdam are already conversant with Enoh’s style of play and are charmed by the star’s humility outside the pitch. Testimonies of his benevolence to others are evident.

A successful man will always have by his side a committed wife. Enoh is happily married and a proud father of three kids. His wife, though soft spoken and quiet, asserts that Enoh is “determined and intelligent because he is versed with other important subjects not related to his profession”. This kind of support from a wife can only lead to success, and success seems to be part of Enoh. He was called up to senior national team, the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon before the 2010 FIFA World Cup and African Cup of Nations. Cameroon legendary defender Tataw Stephen claimed that the call of Enoh to the senior national side was “long overdue as he is one of the few successful talent to grow from within the country. He has made systematic progress by playing successfully for the national under 17 and 20 teams and his sparkling records at club levels make him a credible choice for the national team”.

Such praises does not change Enoh’s personality, with his innocent smile fixed to his face, as he continues to strive for the best. His rigour and determination has motivated his club Ajax to extend his contract which had to end in June 2012 to June 2015.

On 15 December 2010Enoh extended his contract with Ajax.
